Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has hit out at Donald Trump’s plans to get rid of mail-in voting and voting machines, saying the President ‘can’t change the constitution’
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has slammed Donald Trump’s plan to eradicate mail-in voting.
Shapiro, who is believed to be a potential presidential candidate for 2028, addressed reporters at a press conference as he suggested Trump “can sign whatever the hell he wants,” but said it won’t change things.
The President has vowed to get rid of voting machines and mail in ballots as he continues to make baseless claims of mass voter fraud in recent elections. “Donald Trump can sign whatever the hell executive orders he wants to sign and make a show out of whatever he wants,” Shapiro blasted in a press conference broadcast on Fox News.
The Governor continued, “But he can’t change the constitution with an executive order. And the Constitution needs the authority to set our election rules to the states.”
“Let me remind you that it was just about five years ago that a bipartisan majority in the House and in the Senate passed mail in voting, and during that time millions of people have voted by mail, and we have had free and fair, safe and secure elections,” he said.
Shapiro added, “Donald Trump has won some of those elections. He has lost some of those elections. Democrats have won some. Republicans have won some.
“For him to try and put more misinformation out there… to stoke more division and fear amongst people who want to exercise their constitutional right to pick the leaders in their communities and in their Commonwealth, that is just cynical and wrong.
“Donald Trump can sign whatever executive order he wants. It will have absolutely no bearing on our elections here in Pennsylvania.”
“We will once again have free and fair, safe and secure elections… People will be able to vote by mail, or people will be able to vote in person,” he insisted.
His comments followed Trump’s explosive rant on Truth Social where he outlined his strategy to overhaul the current voting system. On Monday, he wrote, “I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we’re at it, Highly ‘Inaccurate,’ Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES, which cost Ten Times more than accurate and sophisticated Watermark Paper, which is faster, and leaves NO DOUBT, at the end of the evening, as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election.”
He alleged the US stands alone globally in using mail-in voting, claiming all other nations abandoned it due to “massive voter fraud encountered.” Trump said efforts to get rid of voting machines would begin with the signing of an executive order to help bring “honesty” to the 2026 midterm elections, when voters will be choosing who they want to represent them in the House of Representatives and Senate.
He also declared elections could never be legitimate with mail-in ballots and everyone understood this. He promised to battle fiercely to restore honesty and integrity to US elections, declaring the alleged fraud of mail-in ballots using voting machines “must end, now.”
